Therapists and Coaches have generally done more thinking about relationships than many other disciplines but the focus of most therapeutic practice is still very focussed on work with adults on adult relationships. It is still very difficult for parents and carers who are looking for help with understanding and helping their child.
Not only that but in therapeutic practice there are still very few tools that support assessment and outcomes in relation to relationship health and relationship skills.
Assessments typically focus on describing symptoms in individuals.
There is a huge gap in training and provision of services in the area of couple and family relationships. There is still a huge need for professionals with skills in understanding how to support relationship skills and relationship health more generally. This is a key gap when it comes to understanding the difficulties we are seeing in children's mental health and wellbeing more widely.
Instead - when it comes to children - somehow - so much discussion in the area of mental health and wellbeing has become focussed on the diagnosis of disorders and on the search for elusive treatments that can be delivered by experts who are offering a fix.
In the search for disorder what gets overlooked is the relationship issues. Relationship health is quite specific and requires specific skills - especially if a child has additional challenges. Relationship Health requires insight and understanding and new skills that can build over time. That's where your skills can be important.
